The expansion in the cultivation of GM (genetically modified) crops has been very rapid. In 1994, there were no GM crops grown commercially anywhere; by 1998, some 29 million hectares of GM crops were cultivated in the USA, Australia, Argentina, Canada and Mexico. There are some 1,500 to 2,000 biotechnology companies in the USA, and a further 700 in Europe. They are said to have already invested $8 billion in technology development.
